There are certain signs that summer is coming to an end. The neighborhood pools get a little quieter and school buses begin appearing on the roads again. Parents are shopping for notebooks, lunch boxes, and fresh pairs of sneakers. And somewhere in the middle of all that excitement, a brand-new backpack is zipped shut for the very first time.
It's a milestone most families hardly think twice about. The backpack gets filled with folders, pencils, a water bottle, maybe a Chromebook, and before long, it's tossed over a child's shoulders as they head out the door.
As a chiropractor, though, I've learned to notice something a little different… I don't notice the backpack itself, I notice what happens after it's on. A child's shoulders round forward ever so slightly. Their head drifts just a little farther in front of their body. One shoulder sits lower than the other as they adjust to the weight. It's subtle, so subtle that most parents would never think anything of it. And honestly, they shouldn't have to.
These aren't signs that something is "wrong." They're signs that a growing body is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It's adapting.
That's one of the most remarkable things about childhood. Growing bodies are constantly changing, learning, and responding to the world around them. Every time a child learns to ride a bike, climbs a jungle gym, or masters a new sport, their brain and body are adapting in incredible ways.
But here's the part we don't talk about nearly enough. A child's body doesn't only adapt to healthy movement. It adapts to repeated stress, too. That stress doesn't have to be dramatic. Sometimes it looks like carrying a backpack that's just a little too heavy. Sometimes it's six hours sitting at a classroom desk, followed by homework at the kitchen table. Sometimes it's looking down at a Chromebook all day and then scrolling on a phone while winding down before bed.
None of those moments are particularly concerning on their own. It's the repetition that matters. Five school days every week. Nine months every year. Thousands of tiny posture decisions that quietly teach a growing body what "normal" feels like.
That's why the beginning of the school year is one of my favorite times to evaluate a child's spine and nervous system. Not because I expect every child to have a problem, but because it's one of the best opportunities to understand how their body is adapting before discomfort becomes the reason we start paying attention.
Parents spend weeks preparing their children for a successful school year. We shop for school supplies, organize calendars, label lunch boxes, and make sure backpacks are packed and ready to go. My hope is that we also remember to prepare the one thing our children will carry into every classroom, every soccer practice, every field trip, and every adventure this year: their growing body.

Growing Bodies Are Designed to Adapt — And That's Both the Good News and the Bad News
One of the things I love most about caring for children is watching just how adaptable their bodies are. Think about everything kids learn during the first few years of life. They learn to roll over, crawl, walk, run, jump, climb, skip, ride a bike, and eventually master sports that require incredible balance and coordination. Every new movement asks their brain, muscles, joints, and nervous system to work together in a slightly different way. Little by little, their bodies figure it out.
It's one of the greatest strengths of childhood. But adaptation has another side that isn't talked about nearly as often.
A child's body doesn't distinguish between adapting to something helpful and adapting to something that places repeated stress on the body. It simply responds to whatever it's asked to do most consistently.
That's why everyday habits matter. A backpack that's a little too heavy. Hours spent sitting in a classroom. Looking down at a Chromebook throughout the school day. Scrolling on a phone after soccer practice. None of these experiences are likely to cause an injury on their own. In fact, most children won't notice anything unusual at all. But when those same positions are repeated hundreds (or even thousands) of times over the course of a school year, the body begins to accommodate them.
If your child consistently carries more weight on one shoulder, the muscles on that side learn to work differently. If they spend hours with their head positioned in front of their shoulders while looking at a screen, the muscles supporting their neck gradually adapt to that posture. Over time, what began as a temporary position can start to feel completely normal.
This is exactly what I mean when I parents that growing bodies are excellent at compensating. Sometimes they're almost too good at it!
Children rarely wake up one morning with poor posture. Instead, posture is shaped one ordinary day at a time.
That doesn't mean every child will develop neck pain or back pain. Far from it! Children are incredibly resilient, and most continue to run, play, laugh, and participate in the activities they love without giving their posture a second thought. The challenge is that the body can compensate for a long time before it ever asks for help.
That's why I believe one of the most important lessons parents can understand is this:
Pain isn't always the first sign that something has changed. Often, it's the last sign that the body has run out of ways to compensate.
What a Heavy Backpack Actually Does to a Growing Spine
Now that we've talked about why children adapt, let's talk about one of the biggest physical demands many of them face every single school day: the backpack.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a child's backpack weigh no more than 10–20% of their body weight. It's a helpful guideline, but one that's surprisingly easy to exceed. Between textbooks, laptops, water bottles, lunch boxes, gym clothes, musical instruments, and sports equipment, many children are carrying far more weight than parents realize.
Fortunately, the body has an incredible ability to compensate. Unfortunately, compensation isn't always the same thing as healthy movement.
When a backpack becomes too heavy, or simply doesn't fit correctly, the body instinctively begins making adjustments to keep itself upright. Children may lean forward slightly, round their shoulders, or allow their head to drift farther in front of their body to counterbalance the extra weight. Others begin favoring one shoulder, creating subtle differences in how the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and upper back work together.
None of these changes happen because a child is "standing wrong." They're simply the nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do: keeping the body balanced while carrying a load. That's an important distinction.
Our bodies are incredibly intelligent. Every second of every day, the nervous system is processing information from the eyes, inner ears, joints, muscles, and feet to answer one simple question: "How do I keep this body upright?"
When a backpack suddenly adds ten, fifteen, or twenty extra pounds to a growing child, the nervous system immediately begins solving that problem. It recruits different muscles, shifts body weight, and changes posture just enough to keep moving forward.
It's a remarkable system.
The challenge isn't that those adaptations happen. The challenge is that they happen every day. By the end of a school year, a child hasn't carried their backpack a dozen times. They've carried it hundreds of times. They've walked hallways, climbed stairs, waited for buses, crossed parking lots, and hurried to class with that same repetitive load over and over again.
A backpack doesn't change posture in one afternoon. It teaches posture one school day at a time.
That doesn't mean every child carrying a heavy backpack will develop pain, nor should parents feel anxious every time they zip up a school bag. Childhood is filled with activities that challenge the body in healthy ways, and backpacks are simply part of modern life.
The goal isn't to eliminate every source of physical stress. The goal is to make sure those everyday stresses aren't quietly asking more of a child's body than it can comfortably handle.
Tech Neck: The Classroom Challenge Parents Don't Always See
If backpacks are one piece of the puzzle, screens are the other.
Twenty years ago, most children spent their school day looking at a teacher, a chalkboard, and a notebook. Today, many students spend hours working on Chromebooks, tablets, or laptops before coming home to complete additional homework on another screen.
Technology has transformed education in wonderful ways! Children have access to information and learning opportunities that previous generations could only imagine. At the same time, our bodies haven't changed nearly as quickly as our classrooms have.
The term "tech neck" describes the forward-head posture that develops when we spend prolonged periods looking down at a screen. While it has become a common phrase among adults, it's increasingly relevant for children as well.
The average child's head weighs approximately 10 to 12 pounds when it's balanced directly over the shoulders. As the head gradually moves forward, the muscles of the neck and upper back must work significantly harder to support that weight. The farther forward the head travels, the greater the demand placed on those supporting muscles.
Think about holding a gallon of milk close to your chest. It feels manageable. Now hold that same gallon at arm's length. The weight hasn't changed, but the effort required to hold it certainly has. The neck works much the same way. When the head stays centered over the shoulders, the muscles can do their job efficiently. As posture shifts farther forward, those muscles must work harder and harder simply to hold the head upright.
Again, the body adapts, so children don't usually notice this happening because it develops gradually. They aren't consciously thinking about where their ears are in relation to their shoulders while they're solving a math problem or finishing a homework assignment. Their nervous system simply figures it out. Over time, though, that constant adaptation can contribute to muscular tension, fatigue, headaches, reduced mobility, and postural habits that become increasingly difficult to break.
The good news is that posture isn't permanent!
Growing bodies continue adapting throughout childhood, which means they also have an incredible capacity to learn healthier movement patterns when given the right support. That's one of the reasons I love working with kids. Their bodies are still learning. Our job is simply to help guide that learning in a healthier direction.
What Parents Usually Notice First
One of the biggest misconceptions about posture is that it always announces itself with back pain. In reality, that's rarely how the story begins. Most parents don't bring their child into my office because they suddenly woke up one morning with severe neck pain. More often, they come in because they've started noticing little things that don't seem connected at first. Maybe their child rubs the back of their neck while doing homework. Maybe they're complaining of headaches after school a few days each week. Maybe they seem unusually tired by the end of the day, despite getting a good night's sleep. Or perhaps a parent simply says, "I don't know... something about their posture just looks different than it used to."
Those observations matter! Not because they automatically mean something is wrong, but because they're often the body's quiet way of telling us it's working harder than it should.
Children rarely stop what they're doing to analyze how their neck feels after carrying a backpack all day. They aren't comparing today's posture to six months ago. They're busy learning, playing sports, spending time with friends, and simply being kids.
Parents, however, often notice the subtle changes first. Sometimes it's a child who constantly shifts positions while sitting at the dinner table. Sometimes it's the athlete who starts rubbing their shoulders after practice. Sometimes it's a child who slouches more than they did the previous school year, even when you remind them to "sit up straight."
Those moments are easy to dismiss because they don't seem dramatic. But that's exactly why they're worth paying attention to. The body doesn't usually jump from "everything is perfect" to "something hurts." More often, it whispers before it shouts. It compensates before it complains.
That's why I encourage parents to become curious about changes instead of fearful of them. Curiosity leads us to ask better questions, and better questions often lead to better answers. Instead of wondering, "Is something wrong?" Try asking, "What might my child's body be adapting to?"
That small shift in perspective changes everything.

Why We Ask a Different Question

Here's the honest answer: sometimes, you wouldn't. Not by looking alone.
How We Look Beyond What the Eye Can See
I've evaluated children whose posture looked perfectly normal from across the room, only to discover real areas of muscular tension during their exam. I've also met children whose parents were worried because they slouched, only to find their bodies were adapting beautifully and just needed a few small changes.
By the time many families arrive at Flourish, they've usually already noticed something. Headaches every Tuesday after school. A shoulder that's always being rolled during homework. A grandparent saying, "He didn't used to slouch like that." Or just a parent's intuition that something has changed, even if they can't quite explain what.

Before your child heads out the door, take a moment to pick up their backpack yourself. Does it feel surprisingly heavy? Could unnecessary items be removed? Does the backpack sit high on their back with both shoulder straps adjusted correctly? The goal isn't perfection. It's reducing unnecessary stress before it becomes an everyday habit.

Children naturally sling backpacks over one shoulder because it's convenient. The problem isn't that they do it once. It's that they do it hundreds of times. Because once we understand those things, we can make decisions from a place of knowledge instead of guesswork.

Our role is to help them build healthy, resilient bodies that are capable of meeting those challenges. That's why I don't spend my days looking for problems. I spend my days trying to understand how children are adapting to the lives they're living.
Sometimes that means celebrating a nervous system that's functioning beautifully. Sometimes it means identifying small areas where the body could use a little extra support. Either way, the goal is exactly the same. To help children move well. Grow well. Sleep well. Learn well. And enjoy being kids. Because childhood shouldn't be remembered for headaches after homework or sore shoulders after school. It should be remembered for friendships, adventures, soccer games, bike rides, science projects, and everything else that makes growing up such an incredible season of life.
